Sunday Hunt

I recently reconnected with a friend of mine from Chicago
who does a lot of horseback riding.
I found some great images of her on one of her hunts on her Facebook page
and thought they would be great subjects for some larger paintings.

Sunday Hunt #1
12 x 24

The figures and the horses were working well in this,
but once I added the background, it felt overworked and fussy.
(And the heads feel a little too big.)

Sunday Hunt #2
12 x 24

So I did another one and made it ALL ABOUT the
figures and the horses.
What do you think?

Last week, I bought lots of new odd sized larger canvas's
to play with and I'm psyched!

  1. I prefer no.2 for the reasons you gave.

  2. Love the second one, the riders so stand out with simplicity all around them. I always look forward to your posts , I find them so refreshing and inspiring.

  3. I like the graphic look of the second one but the first one seems to stimulate my senses more...the smell the sound...the feel of the air...know what I mean?

  4. I feel a greater seperation between the two groups in the second one, and I can't figure out why.The first one without the background trees gives a sense of deeper space, again why? Love them both, and love the questioning that happens.

  5. Thank you everyone for the input! It's great to get feedback.....too much time alone in the studio can make you crazy.
