Edges

I've been working on edges lately so yesterday I set up this bright, "hard edged" coffee pot with these "soft edged" daisies in a strong light.
I've learned that in general, form shadow edges are softer than cast shadow edges.
(Thank you PKR!)

On a side note, I found this sketch in my studio, signed 'Nancy Grier 1977".
I guess while some things change, many things stay the same!

  1. Very nice! I have her first set of videos I am working through gradually, and have ordered the second because I like her style of teaching. So, for this, you mean the edges on the "form" which is the coffee pot are softer than the edges on the blue background cast by the coffee pot? Just trying to wrap my head around what you said with only one cup of coffee!

  2. Yes! You are right! That's what she says in her new DVD about edges. I didn't follow that exactly with this one though as you can see. That cast shadow on the blue should be sharper. I guess. I'm really getting a lot out of these DVD's! Great teaching tools. And she is just so delightful to have in the studio for half an hour!
