Non-fictional Painters

We have a brave group of painters in my
class and I'm challenging them
with all new exercises.
This week we painted the figure using black and white images
using "made up colors".
(any color combination other than what would be expected
ie. blue skin tones)
WHILE KEEPING THE VALUES CORRECT.

This is a daunting task for those of us who are
"non-fictional" painters.
(have difficulty making things up and
generally paint what they see)

I did this quick demo

This exercise is meant to free you from being so literal.
It becomes more about design and
making an expressive statement.

Some of the inspiring class work:

NOTE:
This exercise was adapted from a course I took with
called "Own Your Own Colors".
Some of the photos we used are reference photos
from that class.
