Back to Basics

I'm thrilled to be in the classroom again!
Today was the first day of my
Expressive Painting workshop
at the Falmouth Art Center.

student work!

student work!

While on "sabbatical"
I've developed some new ways to get
back to the basics, with a modern twist.
And this group is up for the challenge!

Thanks everyone.

Generational Painting

Just back from the Mark Daniel Nelson
workshop at the Scottsdale Artist School
and my head is spinning!
He is an incredibly knowledgable, generous, and enthusiastic
instructor and I am newly inspired
by all the new tools I've been given!

One of the many exercises we did,
was called "generational" painting.
Starting with an image, you do a quick painting.
Then you do another, using that painting as a reference,
then do another, then another,
focusing on the big shapes and eliminating more detail each time.

My fourth generation
oil sketch
from this image.

This exercise is a great way to break away from representation
in a gradual progression that makes sense.
So fun!

I can't wait to get busy in the studio now.
Stay tuned.

Another Adventure

Every year I like to travel by myself
for a workshop somewhere out of town.
This time I'm heading to the
for a three day with

 My Traveling Studio

Not only am I dodging a Nor 'Easter in New England,
I'm getting to work with an artist
whose work I have admired for years.
Pinch me.

Back to the Beach

I'm going "back to the beach"
getting ready for the summer gallery season.
It's a great way to enjoy these late winter days!

Laboratory Conditions
24 x 30

Hang in there people!
It's almost over.

At first, I broke up that big orange shape,
with the window
but it looked awkward.

I used Procreate on my I Pad
to see how it would look
if I took them out.

I use that app often when painting larger canvases,
especially on the large sky and sand shapes.
It can save a lot of time and paint!

Just Shapes

Pushing myself to just see shapes.
This is the view from my kitchen window.

"Screened in Porch"
9 x 9 oil sketch

This is still in the works,
but I like where it's going.

Push and Pull

I have been pushing and pulling this
painting in many directions over the passed year.
I finally worked on it today and I'm pleased.

"Traveling Light"
16 x 20
oil /charcoal

Ultimately, I enjoyed working on the many layers of paint
left behind after all those attempts.

I painted this last winter at the same time.

"Four Fillies"
16 x 20

This one has a clean, and smooth paint application
which I also enjoy.
Having fun experimenting
with paint handling and texture these days.

Inspiration Galore

I spent the day googling artist's
I've never heard of and came across
Siddharth Parasnis
Sue Greenwood Fine Art .
Both great finds!

His work inspired me to get out the
Coloraid Paper.

"Harbor Town"
9 x 12
paper collage

This one of his took my breath away.
I thought is was done in paper!
It's oil paint.
"Eternity #79

31 woman

I'm honored that my painting is included in the
the 31 Woman Show at
opening this Friday night!

Ultra Marine
24 x 24

Come by if you are in the area!

Exhibition on 31 Women
Opening Benefit Reception $25
Friday, March 3, from 6 to 9 p.m.
On view March 3-31

In January of 1943, Peggy Guggenheim shocked the art world by devoting an entire exhibition at her Art of This Century Gallery to women artists only.
31 Women was the first of its kind,
devoting the gallery space exclusively to modern women artists,
most of whom were operating in New York.

The James Library & Center for the Arts is reinterpreting
this revolutionary exhibition as a fundraiser for 2017.
