Back to Basics

Generational Painting

Just back from the Mark Daniel Nelson 

workshop at the Scottsdale Artist School
and my head is spinning! 

He is an incredibly knowledgable, generous, and enthusiastic 

instructor and I am newly inspired 

by all the new tools I've been given!   

One of the many exercises we did, 

was called "generational" painting. 

Starting with an image, you do a quick painting.

Then you do another, using that painting as a reference,

then do another, then another, 

focusing on the big shapes and eliminating more detail each time.

This exercise is a great way to break away from representation

 in a gradual progression that makes sense.

So fun! 

I can't wait to get busy in the studio now.

Another Adventure

Every year I like to travel by myself 

for a workshop somewhere out of town. 

This time I'm heading to the 

Scottsdale Artists School 

for a three day with 

Mark Daniel Nelson.

Not only am I dodging a Nor 'Easter in New England, 

I'm getting to work with an artist

 whose work I have admired for years. 

Pinch me.  

Back to the Beach

I'm going "back to the beach"

getting ready for the summer gallery season.

It's a great way to enjoy these late winter days!

It's almost over. 

NOTE: 

At first, I broke up that big orange shape,

with the window 

but it looked awkward.  

I used Procreate on my I Pad 

to see how it would look 

if I took them out.

Bingo. 

I use that app often when painting larger canvases, 

especially on the large sky and sand shapes.  

It can save a lot of time and paint! 

Just Shapes

Pushing myself to just see shapes.

Push and Pull

I have been pushing and pulling this
painting in many directions over the passed year.
I finally worked on it today and I'm pleased.

left behind after all those attempts.

 I painted this last winter at the same time.

This one has a clean, and smooth paint application

Inspiration Galore

I spent the day googling artist's 

I've never heard of and came across
Siddharth Parasnis
via
Sue Greenwood Fine Art .
Both great finds!

His work inspired me to get out the
Coloraid Paper.

In January of 1943, Peggy Guggenheim shocked the art world by devoting an entire exhibition at her Art of This Century Gallery to women artists only. 

31 Women was the first of its kind, 

devoting the gallery space exclusively to modern women artists, 

most of whom were operating in New York.

The James Library & Center for the Arts is reinterpreting

 this revolutionary exhibition as a fundraiser for 2017.
